Easy Picnic Food Ideas for Kids

National Picnic Week is running from the 11th-19th of June and we’ve got all the  hampers, blankets, bags and picnic accessories you could possibly need to enjoy and al fresco meal in the park, but what are the best picnic foods to take with you for the kids?

Here’s just a few easy picnic food ideas that you can prepare and pack in minutes:

Boiled Eggs:

Preparing a healthy snack doesn’t get much easier than hard-boiling a few eggs. Leave the shells on and get the kids to sit down and decorate their own egg, it’ll keep them occupied while you get everything else ready and stop them asking, ‘Is it time to go yet?’ every other minute!

Fruit Kebabs:

Grab a pack of our wooden skewers, pack a selection of seedless fruits like strawberries, blueberries, grapes or chunks of melon in a picnic container and let the kids create their own pick n’ mix kebabs in the park.

Veggie Dips:

Sticks of carrot, celery, peppers and cucumber as well as bite-sized cherry tomatoes and sugarsnap peas take seconds to prepare and are ideal for dipping in hummus, tzatziki, cream cheese or peanut butter.

Ready-made dips are widely available in supermarkets but if you have the time to make your own, you can find hundreds of dip recipes that take less than 30 minutes to prepare on the BBC Food website.

BBQ Chicken Drumsticks:

Chicken drumsticks are ideal for little hands and with our sticky BBQ chicken seasoning they couldn’t be easier to prepare. Simply place eight drumsticks into the Maggi seasoning bag, pop them into the oven and in 35-40 minutes, you’ll have perfectly tender, tasty chicken.

To save time, cook them the night before your picnic, allow them to cool and then pop them in the fridge in an airtight container.   

Sandwiches:

Don’t waste time at home making sandwiches and wrapping them in acres of cling-film. Simply pack some sliced ham, cheese or any other filling you know the kids will eat and let them choose and make their own butties once you get to the park.

Doing this saves you time but it also gives little ones a chance to practice preparing their own food, without making a complete mess of your kitchen!

Treats:

If, after all those tasty nibbles they still have space for some treats (which they will!) then spoil them with a few sugary snacks. You can find a huge selection of crisps, chocolates and sweeties instore.

You can also find a suitable selection of bats, balls, skittles and other outdoor toys for kids that are perfect for a post-picnic run around so they can burn all that crazy kid energy off!
