7 Tips To Ensure Your Skin Looks & Feels Great This Winter

03 November 2016

The cold weather is creeping in, which has left us here at the B&M office wondering how our skin is going to fare this winter. Like many people, our skin tends to get drier as the weather gets colder, so we’ve put together a list of ways you can keep your skin looking and feeling fabulous this winter.

Moisturise

Most people find themselves looking for dry skin remedies throughout the winter months. It’s not a coincidence that most people experience dry skin, or even eczema, as the weather starts to get colder. As the air outside is colder and drier than in the summer months, our skin can become dry and flakey. This isn’t helped by the fact that our showers tend to get warmer as the temperature outside gets colder, and the hot water strips the natural oils from our skin.

Combat dry skin by moisturising at least twice a day, once before bed and once in the morning. This will help your skin to retain its natural moisture while you sleep, as well as throughout the day. When removing your makeup, use facial cleansing wipes that are suitable for dry skin.

B&M Top Tip: If you wear makeup, it will last longer if you apply moisturiser first and leave it for ten minutes to soak into your pores.

Don’t forget your hands

Our hands go through a lot during the day - just think about how much you use them! The skin on our hands, especially on the palms, is very sensitive and needs care and attention every now and then.

If the skin on your hands starts to get drier during the winter months, try using a moisturising hand cream to soften them. We love the Nivea Soft Hand and Body Cream - it smells great too!

Use a lip balm

Our lips can get really dry over winter. In some extreme cases they can even crack, causing painful sores that open when you smile (lovely!). How can we combat this? Lip balm…and lots of it!

Stock up for the winter months by buying some packs of lip balm and keeping a tube wherever you may need it. Work, school, your bathroom, in your handbag…you never know when dry lips will strike, so it’s better to just play it safe and have lip balm everywhere!

Exfoliate regularly

All that dry skin can cause flakiness, so it’s vital to exfoliate regularly to stop this from building up. How often you choose to exfoliate depends on which product you use. Milder exfoliators can be used daily, whereas more vigorous products are better off being used on alternate days.

Try not to over-exfoliate though, as this can cause your skin to become sore, and nobody wants sore skin. If this does happen, just stay away from the exfoliator for a few days, and use a gentle face wash to soothe your skin.

Butter up!

Body butters really come into their own in winter. If you don’t know what body butter is, it’s like a body moisturiser, just thicker and more luxurious. Use a body butter all over your body, focusing more on dry areas such as elbows and knees, every other day and your skin will feel smooth and silky all the time.

Be aware of your skin age

Did you know that your skin changes as you age? We’re not just talking about acne in teenagers and wrinkles as you get older but your skin type does actually change throughout the decades. As you get older, try to swap to a thicker moisturiser which contains more oils. This will ensure your skin doesn't get too dry as it gets colder.

Pat yourself down

A simple trick to help you avoid dry skin is to pat yourself down after your shower, rather than rub the water away. If you dab off the excess water instead, you’ll leave your skin with a little bit of extra moisture, which will give it the hydration boost it so desperately needs over the winter months.

If you take good care of your skin, winter shouldn’t be too harsh on it. Just make sure you keep it hydrated and moisturised to leave your skin looking radiant all year round.
