Life of a Store Manager

Case Study: Maxine Naylor, Hunts Cross Store

Life of a... Store Manager

B&M are expanding rapidly and are expected to grow to over 900 stores in the coming years. Each of those stores comes with exciting opportunities.

Maxine joined B&M Retail in 2011 as an Assistant Manager; she quickly progressed within the company and within 5 months of being with us has become Store Manager of one of the most successful stores in the North West region.

To help give you an insight into the day in the life of one of our successful Store Managers’ here is what Maxine has to say...

Tell us a little bit about you and your journey;

I was promoted from Assistant Manager to Store Manager within five months of joining B&M. This promotion gave me great confidence in my own abilities and within five month this was proven. I had to work hard to turn what was poor performing store into now one of the most successful stores in the North West.

Can you tell me a typical day within your role...

There is no such thing as a typical day in B&M, it’s like a rollercoaster. But that’s why I love it! A ‘typical day’ for me is, spending ten minutes in the office to check and respond to emails, and then it’s about being out on the shop floor. Being commercial, interacting with the customers and staff (I get results working along side my team and getting my hands dirty). Completing any requests from my Area Manager and then maybe having a spot of lunch. Planning, doing and reviewing... engaging and motivating... Making it Happen!

What is unique about B&M?

The autonomy of a Store Manager is brilliant, ‘’It’s the next best thing to having your name above of the door.’’ - Carl Allen Operations Director once told me, that will always stick with me, I’m basically running my own business, controlling everything from what stock goes on the shelf to who puts it on the shelf, it’s an excellent feeling.

Why did you choose to work at B&M?

I chose to work for B&M for the progression and the direction the company is going, I beleive I have definitely made the right choice in continuing my retail career with B&M. I could have stayed at another major food retailer as a Deputy Manager, but I love retail and like I said previously, I’m running my own business! You don’t get that anywhere else.
