How to Play Panini Premier League Adrenalyn XL Trading Cards Game

25 September 2019

The football season is well underway so it’s time to start collecting a new set of playing cards.

Panini's newest release is called Premier League Adrenalyn XL, a game in which you challenge friends by picking your very own team of Premier League superstars.

But with so many awesome card sections, such as, Top Keeper, Awesome Foursome, Power Pairing, Triple Threat, and more, you may need a little help in getting started with Adrenalyn – take a look at our top tips before you pick your team!

Build Your Squad

Before you kick off the new season of Premier League Adrenalyn XL, you must put together a squad of 14 players; 11 starters and three substitutes.

Each team much consist of one goalkeeper and a maximum of five players in each area of the pitch (defence, midfield and attack).

Once you have a squad of players, you’ll need to make a decision on your formation. Will it be a 4-4-2, 4-3-3, or even a 3-4-3? Pick a system that best suits the players at your disposal.

If you have strong attackers, go all out in attack, or pack your defence with world beaters to prevent the opposition from scoring!

Prepare to Play

Place your cards face down in the spaces shown on the game board, with defenders in defence, midfielders in the middle and your forwards in attacking positions.

Each player’s position is marked on the back of their card to help you out. During the game, you're not allowed to look at yours or your opponent's cards that are placed face down.

B&M Top Tip: Before the start of each game, you must decide whether you’re playing for keeps (to win each other’s cards), or just for fun. When playing for keeps, the winner of each round gets to take their opponent’s card.

Kick Off

Once both teams have been chosen, flip a coin to decide who has the first turn. Whoever goes first selects one of their cards and, without showing it to their opponent, decides whether to attack, defend or use the ‘playmaker’ option.

The opponent then chooses one of their cards to respond. Players then compare the chosen values of the cards and whoever has the highest value scores a goal, and that player then starts the next round.

For example, if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - with an attack of 97 - was to come up against Kiko Femenia of Watford, the Arsenal striker would score as the defender’s score of 82 would be beaten.

But, if both cards have the same value, neither team scores, and the cards are discarded until full-time!

At the end of the game, the winner is the player who scored the most points throughout the match.

Penalties

The referee has pointed to the spot! Here's what you need to know about penalties: all cards have a symbol showing an outfield player’s shot rating, or a goalkeeper’s save rating.

Compare the two, and if the ball is placed where the goalkeeper can save (according to their symbols) then it's saved!
