Outdoor Activities You Need to Do This Spring

16 March 2020

Everybody loves spring time. The days get longer, the evenings are brighter and the weather becomes much more predictable! In fact, spring is the perfect season for spending time outside. Brush off the winter cobwebs and watch the blossoms appear during some outdoor adventures!

Here are some of our favourite outdoor activities for spring that your whole family can enjoy.

Feeding wildlife

Many wild birds and garden critters will have struggled through the sparse winter months with very little to eat. Now it’s time for them to find a mate and start little families of their own! They need a lot of energy so it’s a great idea to set up a bird feeder and keep it topped up.

Hiking and mountain biking

A lot of us feel pretty sluggish following our winter hibernation, so one of the best things you can do in spring is to get active. Dusting off your mountain bike or hiking boots is a fantastic way to indulge in a little exercise while fully appreciating the changing landscape around you.

This type of activity is great fun and suitable for all abilities - just be sure to plan your route carefully first!

Camping and picnicking

Kids and adults alike will have a great time becoming one with nature on a camping trip or picnic excursion! Even if you just pitch up on your lawn for a couple of days, it can be a welcome break from the everyday routine.

Grab your tent, roll mats and sleeping bags - or your picnic blanket, reusable cups and cool bag - collect some supplies and you’re good to go! Help your kids to engage in al fresco meals by bringing along a mini tea set or even their very own picnic basket. They’ll love to play host!

B&M Top Tip: Keep your little ones protected from the sun - and nasty insects - with an umbrella, awning or gazebo!

Heading to the park

There are so many things you and your family can do in the park! Outdoor spaces with playgrounds are the perfect place to keep little ones entertained - and, to add a little variety, you could bring along a few toys and games yourself.

Why not try a few rounds of “head basketball” or swingball? Of course, if the weather really heats up, there’s always a good old water fight to be had - so be prepared to catch the full force of a water balloon or Aqua Blaster!

Gardening

Much like the local wildlife, your garden will also need a lot more support in the coming months. If you’ve got something of a green thumb, now’s the time to start tending to spring flowers and planting seeds ready for summer blooming.

Dahlias and nemophila are just two of the colourful flowering species that should be planted this month, ready to brighten your garden in summer.

If you’ve been cultivating seeds inside, waiting for the temperature to rise, now’s the perfect time to transfer your seedlings to pots!

B&M Top Tip: Being outside is so healthy for kids - it keeps them exercised and provides precious vitamin D. Encourage them to join you in the garden by investing in a paddling pool or playhouse!

Spring activities like tending to wildlife, hiking, biking, camping, picnicking, visiting the park and gardening are refreshing and invigorating. Remember to always wear suitable sun protection and dress for the weather!
