The Best UK Beaches To Visit in Winter

23 November 2020

If you want to try something a little different this winter, why not visit some beautiful beaches? From Blackpool Sands to Studland Bay and from the Isles of Scilly to Bamburgh Castle, beach havens have always been among the most popular spots across the UK.

While in the summer months you can enjoy lounging on the white sand, swimming in the blue waters or paddling in rock pools, the winter transforms these locations into romantic, windswept scenes with breathtaking views.

B&M Top Tip: Remember - you should only visit the beaches mentioned in this article if they are local to you. This will help to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Here are some of the best beaches in the UK to visit in winter:

North Cornwall Coast

Bude, Newquay and the Arthurian Tintagel are just a few of the beauty spots dotted along the glorious North Cornish coast. There are beaches galore, along with beautiful seaside towns where you can shelter from the brisk wind in a welcoming pub.

B&M Top Tip: When entering shops, be sure that all members of your group wear a face covering unless exempt - and use hand gel to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Rhossili Bay, Wales

Enjoy panoramic views and rolling sand dunes at Rhossili Bay Beach, beautifully maintained by the National Trust.

B&M Top Tip: You could make a road trip out of it, skirting the dramatic Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries to get to the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park where you can visit the equally stunning Barafundle Bay, which is backed by beautiful pine trees.

Holkham Beach, Norfolk

Wonderfully unspoiled and lined with colourful beach huts that have been immortalised in innumerable paintings, posters and postcards, Holkham Beach at Wells-next-the-Sea is every beach lover’s dream. It rolls on for miles, providing amazing views in both winter and summer.

West Wittering Beach, West Sussex

Not far from Portsmouth and overlooking the Isle of Wight, West Wittering beach is a popular location all year round. Tourists enjoy splashing in the turquoise waters in summer, and, while it’s quieter in winter, it’s equally enjoyable.

B&M Top Tip: The lovely Beach Cafe is usually open on weekends during winter, but be sure to check before you travel.

Southport, Merseyside

There’s so much to do in Southport - it’s a bustling west coast seaside town as well as the location of a highly popular beach and pier.

With the Ribble and Alt Estuaries to the north and amazing views of Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man achievable on clear days, you won’t be short of sightseeing opportunities.

Robin Hoods Bay, Yorkshire

Located near Whitby, the site of a dramatic ruined abbey and the setting for part of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Robin Hood’s bay takes on an ethereal quality in winter.

Search for fossils in the rock pools of the Jurassic coastline, hunt for the Boggle - the goblin of “Boggle Hole” - or take in the wonderful cliff-top views for an astonishing day out.

B&M Top Tip: Keep warm and energised by bringing your own snacks and treats, and don’t forget to stay hydrated on your excursions!

Whether you choose to explore the beaches of Northern England, Wales, the south coast or somewhere completely different, the UK coastline has wonderful surprises in store during the winter months as well as the summer.
