What Type of Wooden Garden Storage Should I Buy?

10 December 2021

Wooden garden storage is our most popular type of outdoor storage. That’s because wood offers a great combination of strength, durability and aesthetic appeal. After all, you couldn’t pick a better material to complement the natural aspects of your garden.

However, not all wood storage is designed, constructed or treated in the same way. To find out more about the different types of wooden garden storage, please read on…

Why do you want to buy wooden garden storage?

Is it for something specific? If so, a tailormade log store, bike shed, tool store or wheelie bin storage unit would be the sensible choice, according to your exact requirements.

Or are you looking for something more versatile? In this case, your choice of multi-purpose wooden garden storage will probably be determined by how much you need to store, the size of your garden, and your budget.

We stock wooden outdoor storage to cater for all of your requirements, ranging from small wooden garden storage chests through to wooden garden stores that are the size of small sheds.

Wooden Garden Storage Construction

In terms of construction, there are 3 main types of wooden outside storage: overlap, shiplap, and tongue and groove.

Overlap Wooden Outside Storage

Overlap is the traditional method of manufacturing a wooden garden store. As the name suggests, slats of wood are fixed to the frame in an overlapping fashion.

Overlap wood provides extremely effective garden storage but its main selling point is that it is excellent value for money. This is simply because it is easier for manufacturers to construct.

Shiplap Wooden Storage

Shiplap wood storage is formed from thick, interlocking boards, with a scalloped profile and large channel running between the boards.

Although this ensures superb rainwater runoff, and helps the wood dry quickly, shiplap is generally regarded as sitting between overlap and tongue and groove in terms of quality. Its price tag reflects this fact.

Tongue and Groove Wooden Garden Storage

Tongue and groove storage is also built from interlocking wooden boards. Like, shiplap, they are usually thicker than overlap boards, making them stronger and longer lasting.

This interlocking construction ensures an exceptionally tight weatherproof seal, which is also far more difficult for thieves to prize open. These benefits come with a price in that tongue and groove stores are the most expensive type of wooden storage.

Wooden Garden Storage Treatment

All of our wooden outdoor storage products have undergone treatment to protect them against rot and fungal decay. This has involved either dip treatment or pressure treatment.

Dip Treatment

Dip-treated wooden storage has, as the name suggests, been dipped into a wood preservative, removed, and then allowed time for the liquid to be absorbed into the wood. You can spot a dip-treated product by its slight orangey hue.

Our dip treated wooden storage enjoys excellent protection against rot and fungal decay, and comes with a 10-year anti-rot guarantee. However, to protect its good looks and validate the guarantee, annual retreatment with a high-quality wood preservative is required. As a result, dip-treated wooden storage is cheaper than pressure-treated alternatives.

Pressure Treated Wooden Storage

Pressure treatment involves placing the wood inside a chamber and forcing the preservative deep inside of it under hydraulic pressure. This ensures it receives the ultimate protection against rot and fungal decay.

Pressure treated wood is lighter in colour than dip treated wood. When new, it often shows small, light green patches. This is simply excess preservative and nothing to worry about. Over time, those patches will fade and you will be left with a beautiful ash-coloured product.

Pressure treated garden storage should not require retreating against rot for at least 15 years. Consequently, it is the more expensive option.
