Double Delight as Local Heroes Open New Liskeard Store

11 February 2015

B&M celebrated the opening of it’s latest store in Cornwall by welcoming not one, but two Local Heroes.

The fast-growing variety retailer opened a new Home Store in Liskeard and hundreds of shoppers turned up for the grand opening at the former Homebase on Plymouth Road.

To help mark the occasion, B&M invited some VIP guests to cut the ribbon and take part in fundraising throughout the day. Paul Bray & Nigel Bibby were both nominated as part of B&M’s search for a ‘Local Hero’ – someone who is renowned for their local charity work or dedication to a particular cause.

Paul’s nomination came on the back of a number of endeavours which has earned him a reputation among locals as a serial fundraiser. He has taken part in numerous bike ride events, raising £4420 for the RNLI having rode 77 miles from Land’s End to St. Germans on one particular occasion.

As well as his charity, Paul’s bravery was commended in the award of his Local Hero status. In 2008, Paul was awarded a BCU (Commander’s Award for Bravery) for helping to restrain an axe-wielding man intent on carrying out a robbery in a post office. In recognition of his remarkable achievements, Paul was invited to the Liskeard store opening to cut the ribbon and he received £250 worth of B&M vouchers to help support his charity work.

Other nominee, Nigel Bibby was also invited to the store opening in recognition of his selfless work. Nigel set up charity Ellie’s Haven after his daughter passed away from a life-limiting illness in 2012. The charity aims to offer children with terminal or life-restricting illnesses a holiday they might not otherwise have had, and construction on a special holiday home in Duloe began in February to accommodate sufferers.

Nigel and representatives from the charity were especially welcomed to the store and took part in bag-packing throughout the day, with proceeds going towards the construction of the holiday home.

The opening of the Home Store with Garden Centre at the Bubble Retail Park is further proof of B&M’s commitment to investing in local communities, with the store creating up to 75 jobs for local people.

And there is further good news for south-coast residents, with a third Cornwall store due to open in St. Austell in February.
