7 Alternative Recipes for a Sizzling BBQ

16 June 2016

Nothing brings friends and family together quite like a BBQ. Enjoying the sunshine and good food is what makes our summers so memorable so make the most of the sun while it’s out. Here we bring you some lesser-known recipes from some of the internet’s best food blogs and websites for a unique BBQ.

Clucking great chicken

Just because you’re watching your red meat intake doesn’t mean you have to skip the BBQ. Chicken packs less saturated fat than beef and lamb and it tastes just as good flame-licked from the BBQ.

And it’s so versatile too. Whether you’re throwing a few drumsticks on or dicing, marinating and skewering, you can’t go wrong. The marinade for this chicken fajita kebab recipe from Great British Chefs will take between 1-2 hours but once skewered they’ll take only 3-4 minutes on each side for that lightly charred taste.

Or why not try a sticky BBQ chicken burger from BBC Good Food? A simple sauce made up of ketchup, brown sauce, honey and garlic will have guests queuing for seconds.

Go veggie

With roughly 4 million vegetarians in Britain, there’s a good chance at least one of your guests will be meat-free. Luckily there are tons of tantalising veggie recipes made even better on the BBQ.

And we don’t just mean plain Quorn sausages or Linda McCartney burgers. Red Online features some lip-smacking recipes to satisfy all palates. Like spiced sweet potato slices which just need softening up and seasoning with a sprinkle of coriander and cumin, before a few minutes on the BBQ.

For something a bit more filling, stuff your face with lentil-stuffed peppers. They’ll take a bit longer to cook and need slightly more prep time than the slices, but the results are mouth-watering!

Add fizz for flavour: Sweet Cola Ribs

Another recipe that you’ll have to invest a bit more time in but the rewards are out of this world. These sticky barbecue ribs get their sweetness from a single can of cola and a couple of table spoons of sugar that help make up a sauce bursting with BBQ flavour.

B&M Top Tip: prepare everything the day before your BBQ so that rubs and sauces have a chance to marinate and soak up all the tongue-tingling flavours!

Don’t forget you can grab your cola cans, fizzy drinks, beer and cider for your BBQ at B&M.

There’s always room for dessert

Talking of sweet things, it’s always a good idea to leave room for dessert. And with this banana boat recipe even if you haven’t left room, you’ll be desperate to give it a try.

A Taste of Home will tell you everything you need to know for these cute fruit “wraps” topped with chocolate chips and marshmallows, lightly grilled for a caramelised flavour.

We also love these grilled fruit skewers, meaning you can get the most out of those dying embers with no washing up. Just pierce your favourite fruits, cover with foil and grill for 4 minutes.
