05 October 2020

Concerned about keeping children safe while outdoors on the spookiest day of the year? Check out B&M’s guide to celebrating Halloween safely. Among our top safety tips, we advise you to:

  • Ensure their costumes are safe
  • Check your child's sweets
  • Keep pets safe
  • Give them light

Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year for youngsters. It’s an opportunity to dress up, have fun with friends and score some tasty snacks!

However, from dangerous Halloween costumes to evening walks, there are many potential hazards lurking. In this guide to celebrating Halloween with kids, we provide basic Halloween safety tips to help you enjoy the spookiest day of the year without any worries.

Ensure Their Costumes are Safe

A young child’s costume should not contain any flammable elements, long trailing parts or small pieces that they could choke on.

B&M Top Tip: If your little one is prone to skin reactions, don’t forget to check the face paint you use for potential irritants. Make sure all temporary tattoos used are safe, too.

Check Your Child's Sweets

While most Halloween treats will be absolutely fine, one of the most important things you can do to keep your kids safe is to double check what you've bought is safe before they tuck in.

Boiled sweets can be a choking hazard and you should also check for any relevant allergens, such as nuts.

Keep Pets Safe

You might not be trick or treating this year, but you can still get out of the house briefly to show off your costumes. This can be something as simple and routine as taking your furry friend for his evening walk - and there are plenty of cute pet outfits and accessories available at B&M.

However, you’ll need to think of ways to protect your furry friend as well as keeping your children safe.

A light up jacket or a harness with reflective tape will make sure your pet is easy to see. Keep them on the lead too to stop them from wandering off.

Give Them Light

Visibility is everything when it comes to Halloween. Glow sticks look super cool and their light will help to prevent youngsters disappearing from sight or being hit by a car as they cross the street.

You can also pick up awesome flame-free Halloween lanterns, glowing pumpkins and other light-up accessories that both add to a costume and improve safety.

So, the key tips from our guide to celebrating Halloween safely include planning in advance, checking costumes and treats, taking care of pets and making sure everything is well lit.
