19 January 2017

The lead up to a birth is a time for preparation and excitement. Although it can be difficult deciding what type of gift to get a mother and baby, nappy cakes are becoming really popular and are now a staple of the baby shower. It’s a gift that can be made amongst a group of friends and is a nice, creative way to spend an hour or two the night before the party.

A nappy cake acts like a centrepiece at the gathering and contains some of the essentials a new mum will need in those precious and crazy first few weeks.

We’ve gathered together some nappy cake design ideas to inspire your next baby shower!

What’s in a nappy cake?

Nappy cake ingredients are pretty flexible. The basis is a collection of nappies, but you’re free to add any baby-related accessories as decoration. Vests, socks, baby-grows, dummies, flannels, toys, blankets, creams and soft hair brushes are just some of the things that can be bundled into the creation.

Always great for craft-inspiration, Pinterest provides a number of great ideas for nappy cakes – as well as handy guides on how to make your own.

Tips on how to make a nappy cake

There are lots of really handy how-to guides on Pinterest. While the creations you see online may look complicated, you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to create a simple cake.

The foundation is the most important factor and all you need is something to wrap nappies around. This can be a cardboard tube from a kitchen roll, or a cake tin that you can roll nappies in and around.

You may need an extra pair of hands for these creations, as there is a lot of fastening items to secure them. String and ribbons are invaluable to the build, and remember to use a little centrepiece to top it off – a rubber duck, cuddly toy or silk flowers.

For those babies whose gender is yet to be revealed, this is an extremely cute way of celebrating its arrival. Stick with neutral colours like grey, white, yellow, purple and pale greens.

This nappy cake, above, is bath time-themed. A combination of nappies, a hooded bath towel, face cloths, muslin cloths (tip: new mums can never have enough muslins!), combs and rubber ducks create a traditional two tier “cake”.

This is a great nappy cake for beginners. The build is simple – a spiral of nappies that have created the two tiers of cake and strung up tightly. The tiers have been wrapped around with muslin cloths or cotton blankets and topped with three pinwheels.

It’s an easy creation – but so pretty and effective!

How great is this nautical nappy cake? Again, it’s easier than it looks. The nappies have just been rolled up into an oval shape. Alternatively, you can use a baby bath to create the same shape. You can fill the hollow with more nappies, or stuff with things like wipes, baby clothes or bath products.

Cover this with a baby blanket or cloth, and then wrap a long blanket around the sides. Tie up with a nautical-themed ribbon.

The top is just a mini version of the base, and two socks have been put on two cardboard tubes to create the ship’s funnels. The rest of the boat has been decorated with some more little socks, a teething ring and some baby feeding spoons – but you have free rein to decorate it as you see fit.
