How to Deep-Clean Every Room in Your House

17 September 2020

Planning to deep clean your home? There’s no need to get professional cleaning services in. In this article, B&M offers tips on how to deep clean your house and leave it looking perfect. These tips include:

  • Declutter before deep cleaning
  • Deep clean mirrors and glass
  • Remove dust from surfaces
  • Deep clean the floors
  • Vacuum the house

Many of us have a cleaning checklist that we use to keep the place in order. However, deep cleaning your house at least once a year is a great way to prevent problems from building up.

Forget “spring cleaning” - autumn is the best time to refresh your home room by room. After all, as the days get shorter, you’ll be spending more time indoors - and, with party season approaching, you’ll want your house to look its best before decorating.

So: get your gloves on and let's get started!

Declutter Before Deep Cleaning

Bin unwanted items and intelligently store away belongings that don’t need to be on show. You don’t want to be cleaning around objects, so getting as many things out of the way as possible is a great start.

Deep Clean Mirrors & Glass

You can make a huge difference by cleaning reflective surfaces. Use quality glass cleaner and polish with a clean microfibre cloth to avoid streaks.

If surfaces are particularly dirty, get the worst off with a sanitizing wipe and a j-cloth first.

B&M Top Tip: Leave a paste of baking soda and warm water on surface mould for ten minutes to remove it. Using a dehumidifier will prevent future build-up.

Clean mould off shower curtains by putting them in the washing machine with a small amount of detergent and about 200ml of white vinegar and using the gentlest setting.

Remove Dust from Surfaces

Use microfibre dusters to reach into corners and remove dust and cobwebs, starting from the top and working down. This is one of the first things you should do in every room, as the particles that fall to the floor can then be hoovered up!

B&M Top Tip: A lot of dust can build up on light fittings and ceiling fans if they aren’t cleaned regularly! Attack soft furnishings with a lint roller too, to prevent further dust transfer.

Deep Clean the Floors

You may not have noticed your carpets changing colour, but months of use will have made a real difference.

We love Dr Beckmann’s carpet products, including carpet cleaners that come with a handy brush attachment. You’ll be amazed at the change once you’ve finished!

B&M Top Tip: Spritz carpets with an odour-eliminating carpet freshener to get it smelling divine.

Vacuum the House

A while after you’ve cleaned, we highly recommend hoovering around your home one last time to catch any dust that has settled. Use all attachments to get into hard-to-reach corners.

If you have home-washable curtains, get them into the laundry room before hoovering to avoid shaking loose any dust or threads onto clean floors.

B&M Top Tip: Your home will feel much fresher just by switching out the dish soap, detergent, fabric softener, air freshener or reed diffuser scent and even the disinfectant or all-purpose cleaner you use!

Our top cleaning tips include decluttering, cleaning glass surfaces, dusting, refreshing floors and hoovering extensively to finish.
